This 5 5/8" long, heavy, nearly 1.3 T. oz., sterling silver teaspoon has its origins in mid 19th century Calcutta, India. It was made by Hamilton & Co., which one online source describes as "probably the [most] well known and celebrated British silversmith operating in India (he is known as the Garrard of India)." Marks include an elephant (a standard mark comparable to the English lion), an "H&C," a rubbed "A," and one other rubbed symbol...

Whiting used a single bowl form for all its serving spoons in the "Imperial Queen" line, and that appears on this 7 1/2" long, 1.5 T. oz. small berry or preserve. It is in flawless condition and without a monogram or removal. The finish is lustrous. Marks are the Whiting logo, "Sterling," "Pat. 1893.," and an Old English "O."

In pristine condition, and without a monogram or removal, this original example of Alvin's Art Nouveau "Old Orange Blossom" measures 6" long and weighs a relatively heavy 1.2 T. oz. It is marked with the finely lettered words "Patent" and "Sterling" as would be expected, along with the three part Alvin emblem. All the elements of the floral design retain their sharply defined and detailed elements, including those that so artfully extend onto the scallop shaped bowl...

An early Wood & Hughes piece, dating circa 1855, this coin silver master butter knife is substantially sized at 7 3/4" long and weighing 1.1 T. oz. It is a singular design, having a twisted stem and a notched, shield shaped handle. It is similar in overall form to Gorham's little known "Imperial" pattern of the same period, and of which Wood & Hughes had an almost identical match. The upper edge of the blade has two notches that repeat the design of the handle...

Gorham's "Medallion" was the pattern of choice offered by mid 1860's Tiffany & Co. when it was only a retailer and not a manufacturer. This 5 7/8" long, .8 T. oz., ice cream spoon is an example of this partnership. It is stamped lion, anchor, G for Gorham, "Pat. 1864," "Tiffany & Co.," and "Sterling" on the plain backside. The figure is a youthful helmeted male warrior. The blunt end bowl has a ribbed interior and notched and slightly flanged shoulders...

The genre is known as "souvenir spoons," but occasionally such commemorative items were produced in other forms. That is the case with this 6 3/8" long, probably youth, fork made by Watson. It is a heavy item, weighing 1.3 T. oz., and reflecting exceptional die work and finish. The word "Missouri" appears on a banner draped across the end of the handle. There are a remarkably high number of additional images portrayed on both sides of the remainder of the handle...

Gorham's Rosette is an early line pattern for that company, patented in 1868 as indicated by the stamp on the reverse (other marks are lion, anchor, G and the word Sterling). It is a straightforward design, taking its name from the single rosette set in the lower portion of the handle. It has a lined border and angular end that is tipped with fan, scrolling and stylized acanthus leaf detailing. This item is a 6 3/4" long, 1.3 T. oz. preserve or jelly spoon...

Measuring 8 5/8" long and weighing approximately 1.3 T. oz., this coin silver spoon is stamped "D. Mendel" and "Louisville" for the mid 19th century Kentucky retailer. It has a characteristic for the area broad tipt end and high shoulders off the bowl. There is no monogram or removal. The overall condition is very good, with no visible wear. The bowl is well-shaped and free of tip wear, but has some pebbling in the interior. This has been addressed by a silversmith but was not able to be re...

Fully stamped for Exeter, England, with a date letter of 1857, this pair of tongs measure 5 3/4" long and weigh not quite 1.7 T. oz. The maker's stamp is "TB" which could be Thomas Byne or Thomas Blake. They are plain with beveled edges, and have cup grips. There is a feathered script "DTB" monogram on the arch. The condition is superb. There are no bends, cracks, or burrs, and the finish is finely patinated.
