This pair of master salts with matching "MEK" monograms are both model number A2640 and appear in the Gorham catalog of 1900 (see image 2). Marks are lion, anchor, G, and "Sterling," along with the model number. One of the two has a date symbol for 1898 and one a date symbol for 1900. This may explain the slight variation in size between them. The earlier one is 2 1/2" in diameter, 1 1/4" high, and weighs not quite 1.2 T. oz...

Measuring 7 7/8" long and weighing 2.2 T. oz. this is a small berry spoon. The pattern is Reed & Barton's enduring Art Nouveau "Les Six Fleurs." It is an original piece, to be distinguished from contemporary reissues and re-strikes. There is a flowing script "FCH" on the reverse. The condition is outstanding. There is no wear on the high relief and precisely detailed floral portraiture which is a hallmark of this pattern. Marks are the Reed & Barton emblem, Sterling, and the words "Pat...

Gorham's Japanese is a multi-motif pattern featuring various figural themes set against a stylized (and somewhat pseudo) ground of Far Eastern-looking elements. It definitely falls within the category of the Aesthetic taste and has always had strong decorative appeal. This example is an 8 9/16" long, a bit light feeling at 2.0 T. oz., pie or pastry server. The image on this form is a peacock perched atop the handle, with a long, trailing tail...

This popular souvenir spoon was originally produced by Gorham in the 1890's and reissued as late as the 1970's or 80's. The dating on this 4 1/4" long, relatively heavy .4 T. oz., example is uncertain, although it has qualities that suggest age. The handle retains a sharply defined pattern front and back sides and in the bowl of the spoon. The elements of the design are highly detailed and not murky...

This 5 7/8" long, 1.2 T. oz. sugar spoon in Reed & Barton's Les Six Fleurs is an original item and about as finely rendered an example of this popular Art Nouveau design as might be found. It is certainly to be distinguished from the contemporary reissues and restrikes of this pattern. There is no wear on the high relief and precisely detailed floral portraiture. The imagery exquisitely conveys the sinuosity for which Art Nouveau is known, with the silver seeming virtually liquid...

Gorham issued a series of engraved patterns c. 1880 on an "Antique" blank. This 7 1/2" long, quite heavy, 2.3 T. oz., gravy ladle is an example from that line. It has a satin matte surface with engraving that includes a stylized palmetto leaf, rosettes, and a leafy drop. The handle is engraved "DeWolfe." on the front in Old English lettering, and "May 6th 1880" in script on the reverse. The bowl is oval, measuring 2 1/2" by 2" by 3/4" deep. The condition is flawless...

"Old English Tipt" is a Gorham pattern that was originated in 1870, but produced over a long period of time. Marked "Gorham" and "Sterling," this probably dates from the mid 19th century. It is a 7 1/4" long, relatively heavy, just over 1.0 T. oz., iced tea spoon. There is a script "MAD" monogram that harkens to the Art Nouveau style. It is in excellent condition with no visible wear, and a fine finish.

This 7 3/4" long, weighty, 1.3 T. oz., coin silver master butter knife is marked "F. Hoffmann," which is something of a mystery name. Given the mid 19th century style of the piece, a likely attribution is Frederick Hoffman with origins in New York, but largely working in Philadephia, with dates 1820-49. His spelling, however, is listed with a single "n" so that introduces uncertainty...

Measuring 7 1/16" long, and weighing not quite .5 T. oz., this is a long-handled olive fork. The pattern is Towle's Rustic, dating from 1895. It is a relatively high relief scroll and bead design. The design carries into the heel of the two-tine, gold washed serving end. This is without a monogram or removal. It is in excellent condition. There is a bit of very light scuffing on the edges of the tines, with this being the only indicator the piece was ever used.

Wilson was a prominent name in 19th century Philadelphia silver manufacturing. The firm operated as a partnership between Robert and William from the 1820's to the 1850's and it was during this time that this 5 3/4" long, .6 T. oz., coin silver teaspoon was made. The broad handle, narrow shank design of the handle stands apart from what is generally characteristic of the company's style. It has attractive engraving on the handle, with a reserve at the tip. This has a fancy, feathered script ...

This 6" long, modest weight, teaspoon in Gorham's classical motif "Medallion" is in exceptionally fine condition. The high relief, male warrior figure has been spared polishing wear; it retains sharp, clear detail. The bowl is even, with a nicely rounded tip, and free of burrs or dimples. The finish is lustrous. Marks are lion, anchor, G, "Pat. 1864," and Sterling.

This 4 1/4" long coffee spoon is marked with a first standard .950 purity (slightly more than sterling) French Minerva, a bigorne, and the maker's stamp, which is an "L" and "M" flanking either side of a dome shape set at a cant. The handle is three dimensional and imprinted with a hanging leaf and berry design. The end of the handle has a cast knight astride a horse. He looks something in the manner of a crusader figure, with an upraised sword in his right hand. The casting is extremely fin...
