H.L. Dole & Co. (Maine) Coin Silver Sugar Shell
$ 35
A "Pointed Antique" design with a tipt end and engraved surface, this 5 7/8" long, light weight, coin silver sugar shell is stamped "H.L. Dole," for the Cumberland, Maine jeweler and silversmith with dates c. 1855-60. Whether he made it or only retailed it is impossible to say, but it has a simple charm that evokes Maine sensibilities. The shell bowl is melon-shaped with pronounced ribbing. The backside is monogrammed "EFJ" in a rather naive, but engaging, script. The piece is without wear. There are no dents, dings, or bends in the bowl and the engraving remains crisp. Marks are the Dole name and the word "Coin."
