Whiting produced serving spoons in "Lily" in a variety of sizes, some with minor differences in length. This is apparently the largest, measuring 9 1/4" long and weighing just under 3.7 T. oz.
It is also distinguished by the over-sized scale of its bowl which is 3 1/2" long and 3" wide.
It is an old example, bearing all the marks for an early production piece. These include the Whiting logo, the words "Pat. 1902," "R'd 1902," and an Old English "O." Lastly, it is stamped with the name of the retailer, "T.C. Tanke" of Buffalo, New York.
A finer estate example of this enduring Art Nouveau floral pattern is not to be found. There is not a hint of wear, with all the fine line detail of this high relief design fully present. The bowl is free of nicks, dents, or scratches.
The eye of the designer is evident in the bowl finish which moves subtly from a brilliant sheen on the edges to a satin one toward the center. Later production is blunt in presentation in comparison to old silver with such small finishing details that set it apart.
