Dating from 1880, Whiting's "Persian" is a Moresque design deriving from the same sensibilities that generated Tiffany's pattern of the same name, as well as Whiting's own "Arabesque" and Gorham's "Hindostanee" among others. This example is a 7 1/2" long, 1.5 T. oz., preserve or jelly spoon. It has the plum-shaped bowl with flanged rim and central rib that Whiting used across several lines of the period. Persian has a reserve area at the front of the handle which is a natural location for an inscription. This is a variant in that that area has an engraved fan-like design. The backside is without a monogram or removal. The condition is excellent. The pattern shows no evident polishing wear and the form is flawless. The bowl has some light surface scratches and retains only pale elements of its original gold wash, otherwise it too shows no evidence of wear. Marks are the Whiting emblem, and the words "Sterling" and "Pat. App. For," indicating it is an early production item. The retailer's name is "Wm. Faber & Son" of Philadelphia.
