Durgin "DuBarry" Sterling Silver Serving Spoon
A jelly or small berry spoon, this example of "DuBarry" aka "Madame DuBarry" made by Durgin measures 7 11/16" long and weighs approximately 2.5 T. oz. This example was retailed by Philadelphia's "Bailey, Banks & Biddle" as indicated by the "B.B.&B. Co." stamped on the reverse of the handle. Other marks include the Durgin "D" and the word "Sterling." The design is robust and formal, featuring leafy wreaths set on both the handle and the center of the bowl. The end of the handle has a scrolled top as might be found on a piece of period French furniture. This detail is repeated at the join with the bowl. The bowl retains traces of an original gold wash while the handle has an Old English "S" monogram. The condition is excellent. Apart from light surface scratches consistent with age, there are no signs of use.
