Similar to Gorham's "Louis XIV," this pattern has parallels in designs produced by George Sharp and John Wendt, of which this 7 1/8" long, nearly 1.1 T. oz., master butter knife is one. It is marked "Coin" on the reverse, with no other identifiers.
The pattern and piece both date c. 1870, and include a period bellflower, leaf, and scroll motif. It has a reserve, which in this case is without a monogram or removal. It is double die struck, meaning the design appears on both sides of the handle. The blade has an upswept, scalloped upper edge. The condition is excellent. There is no visible polishing wear. The blade is free of bends or nicks, and the finish is appealing.
