Dating from the early 1870's, Gorham's "Japanese" pattern is a high form expression of the Aesthetic mode. It features a variety of subjects including birds, insects, and as in the case of this 4 1/4" long, just under .4 T. oz., demitasse or coffee spoon, a standing female figure.
This piece is an exceptionally fine example in mint condition. All the design elements remain crisp and clearly defined. The bowl is completely smooth, free of burrs or nicks, and has a bright gold wash front and backsides. The finish is lustrous. The backside is plain save for the marks which are lion, anchor, G, and the word "Sterling."
