Measuring 1 3/8" by 1" by 1/4" inch, and weighing just over .3 T. oz., this match safe or vesta is a late Victorian item. Stamped only "Sterling," on the lower inside lip, the maker is unknown.
It is a well made item, with flowing scroll edges and reinforced margins on the upper and lower portions. The hinge is unusual in that it is formed from a chain link.
The feature that sets it apart is the raised (bumble?) bee that is applied to the front. This is well formed and shows considerable detail, including segments to the body and veins in the wings.
There is no monogram or inscription, or removal of same. The condition is excellent. The piece is free of splits or breaks. The hinge is secure, and the finish is pleasing.
