One of several patterns that Whiting produced c. 1880 with a twisted handle, this example has a round twist lower section joined to a four sided diamond shaped end. It is referred to as "Square Twist" by some sources, while that name is reserved by other sources for another design.
The piece is an ice cream slice. By nature, these are large items, but this exceeds even what would be expected of the form. It measures 12 7/8" long and weighs a massive 6.0 T. oz.
While evidently plain, there are subtle aspects to the solid silver blade that reflect a high level of design sophistication. The swooping lower edge is beveled, while the upper edge has a repeating scalloped motif. The front has a subtle, satin matte finish, in contrast to the backside which has a polished finish. The backside is also imprinted with the Whiting logo, "Sterling," the number "24," and the name of the retailer, Boston's "Shreve, Crump, & Low."
The condition is mint estate. Apart from light surface scratches consistent with age, there are no signs of wear. The blade is free of any nicks, burrs, or bends. The handle remains straight and without any marring.
