Commonly called "Peony Twist," this Whiting design was apparently offered in limited production. Most examples that show up are serving pieces, as is the case with this 7" long, 1.3 T. oz., sugar sifter. The handle stem has the twist form that is characteristic of this pattern, while the end is surmounted with a full peony blossom portrayed in considerable detail. The surface of this portion is finished in a satin matte, and in this instance has a script "TMA" monogram.
The bowl is particularly appealing. It has four semicircular lobes surrounding a flat bottom. There are a multitude of piercings of various shapes, while the heel of the bowl has an imprint of the peony blossom mirroring that on the handle. The backside of the piece is plain save for the Whiting logo, the word "Sterling," the number "26" on the handle, and the number "15" at the join with the bowl.
This condition is mint estate. There is no visible wear or damage. The finish has a natural, lustrous patina.
