Examples of Whiting's "Arabesque" as pristine as this 9" long, 2.0 T. oz., berry spoon are rare indeed. The low relief, dense, decorative design that features a griffin as the main feature is readily subject to polishing wear. This piece retains all its original fine detailing including, and especially so, the delicate feathering on the griffin's breast and wings.
All other aspects of the piece are equally pure. The plum-shaped bowl (one of four styles Whiting utilized in this 1870's period) is perfectly shaped and retains all its original pale, satin matte gold finish front and back sides.
Lastly, it is without a monogram or removal.
Marks are the Whiting logo, "Sterling," "Pat 1874," and the number "18," all stamped on the reverse heel of the bowl.
