$ 115

Marked "Patent 1867" on the backside of the handle, and stamped with a lion, anchor, G, "Ionic" is one of Gorham's earliest full line patterns. It was also issued just before Gorham went from coin silver to a sterling standard in 1868 and examples of it are rather uncommon.

This example is a large, 8 1/2" long, 2.3 T. oz., serving spoon. It has a large, round bowl with a rippled base and notched shoulders. It is finished in a mostly intact, bright gold wash front and backsides. The piece may be for berry, vegetable, pudding, or salad.

The design is period, with a Classical Revival inclination. The main feature is a central rosette with flaring elements, and a lined border. There is a fancy, feathered script "MCT" monogram.

The condition is superb. There is no evident polishing wear. The engraving remains crisp and the bowl is free of dings, dents, or burrs. The finish is lustrous.
