This sterling silver cold meat fork is about as large as such pieces get, measuring 8 5/8" long and weighing a very heavy 2.4 T. oz. The pattern is one of several kings and queens iterations that Gorham evolved over a span of about fifty years.
Each of these designs seemed to become more detailed, and that is the case with this late, 1899, expression. It incorporates the requisite shell and acanthus leaf elements characteristic of the queens motif in a variety of ways on both sides of the handle. This includes an expanded shell form on the backside heel of the four tine serving end.
It is without a monogram or removal and in very fine condition. The pattern detail remains well-defined and the finish is pleasing. The tines are even, pointed, and free of bends. There are some knife scratches on the backside of the two outer tines, and one nick on the center front of the handle.
Marks are the Gorham lion, anchor, G, "Sterling," and "Pat. 1899."
