Model number "1183" according to the stamp on the underside, this 9" wide, 2" high, 9.9 T. oz., bowl was made by Gorham whose name and lion, anchor, G mark also appears on the bottom along with the word "Sterling." Additionally it carries a date emblem for 1958.
The date is consistent with the style as this has the clean, unencumbered look characteristic of Mid Century Modern design. It has a plain, squared, turned rim. The innovative, and offsetting, aspect of the piece is the "Greek Key" band that encircles the rim. This element of course has its roots in classical design, but adapts well to the clean, simple look of this piece. The detail appears on both the inside and outside surfaces and is not simply a rolled imprint with one the negative form of the other. Rather, each surface is independently constructed with raised and inset elements resulting in a block-like structure as might appear on a building frieze.
There are no inscriptions or removal of same, and the condition is mint estate. There are no dents, creases, or burrs. The finish is brilliant, with a natural, i.e. not buffed, finish. The surface shows only minimal scratches from use.
