Bateman traces to four family members who worked in London and is one of the most recognizable names in English silversmithing.
This pair of tongs is stamped "PB AB WB" for Peter, Ann, and William, and represents one of numerous marks associated with the various family members. It carries a date letter for 1801-02.
The piece measures a generous 5 1/2" long, is 1 5/8" across at the arch, and weighs just over 1.0 T. oz.
The grips are cup form and the arms and arch have undulating margins. There is extensive bright cut engraving that is dominated by a floral like design on the arms. There is also a reserve area on the arch, which in this instance is without a monogram or removal.
The condition is mint. There are no bends, breaks, or repairs. The engraving remains crisp and well-defined. The finish has a bright, hand polished, luster.
