Named for the rose which is the central portraiture of the design, "Eglantine," i.e. sweetbrier, is an early, 1870, Gorham pattern and one of the company's most refined.

Cast rather than the typical die struck mode of manufacture, it demonstrates the intricate, high relief detail casting enables.

It is a heavy line, and that is the case with this lengthy, 5 1/8", pair of sugar tongs which weigh a substantial 1.3 T. oz. They have intricately articulated talon grips that are finished in a matte gold wash. There is a raised fist and forearm crest on the arch. The pattern appears on the interior of the arms which is atypical for tongs.

It is in superb condition. There is no evident wear, nor bends, cracks, or repairs. The finish is flawless.

Marks are the Gorham "lion, anchor, G" emblem and the word "Sterling," both of which are nearly disguised within the texture of the pattern.
