In the same genre as Whiting and Tiffany's "Japanese" and Wendt's "Bird," Wood & Hughes 1875 "Japanese" follows after this group of patterns in featuring a bird image set amid a leafy surround. The degree of detail is precise and finely rendered, with all the elements laid upon a stippled ground.
This example is an 8 5/8" long, relatively heavy at 1.8 T. oz., tablespoon. The backside of the handle has an elegant, feathered script "BW" monogram.
The condition is excellent. There is no visible pattern wear and the finish has a hand-polished, natural luster. The bowl remains well-shaped and free of tip wear. It is absent dents or burrs, but has some slight, shallow pebbling in the base.
Marks are "WwH," "Sterling," and "Wood & Hughes," this latter mark suggesting the piece may have been retailed directly by the company.
