Most American silver manufacturers adopted a sterling standard over coin in the 1860s. For a short period of time, New York's Ball, Black & Co. promoted a higher silver content yet, namely 950 rather than 925.

This 6" long, approximately .8 T. oz., teaspoon is to this higher standard and so marked, along with the name of the company name.

It is a "Bead" design with an "Oval Thread" on the backside, both of which were standard patterns in the period. The bowl has a pointed tip with a slight lip. The backside is engraved "SCH" in a fancy, feathered script.

It is in outstanding condition. There is no polishing wear and the finish is lustrous. The bowl is well-shaped and free of dents although there are some very slight pinprick nicks in the base.
