One of the most recognized and highly regarded names in the realm of British silver, Matthew Boulton's work commands great interest. He worked in sterling silver but is especially known for his silverplate production. Abundant in-depth information about the maker and his product is readily accessible on the internet, and which can be referenced to inform this listing further.
This Georgian wine coaster, aka caddy, of which a pair is available, is silverplate and is stylistically akin to other examples of Boulton's work. It is marked with a single sunburst on the lower rim.
It measures 6 3/4" in diameter and stands 2" high. There is a central silver disk engraved with an upraised arm holding a sword, set in the wooden base. The underside has a green felt covering.
This is an estate item, with a multi-generational history within one family. It has been used and shows significant wear. While there are no bends, dents, or breaks in the metal, there is extensive loss of the silver with corresponding patches of the underlying copper showing through.
