One of numerous twisted handle patterns that Whiting produced c. 1880, this fork and spoon pair have a spiral lower section and a larger, blocky, square twist upper end.
While a salad set, either piece could be used independently.
They are substantially sized items, with the fork measuring 9 1/4" long and weighing 1.9 T. oz., and the spoon 9 1/8" long and 2.2 T. oz.
The serving ends shows an Aesthetic influence, with their irregular, scalloped shoulders and rippled bowls. This latter detail evokes the notion of waves in the water. Both pieces retain pale gold wash satin finishes on the serving surfaces.
The condition is choice estate. There is no visible wear. The serving areas are free of nicks, dents, or bends. The spoon bowl has several small dulled areas where black spots were polished off. The finishes are warm and bright.
Both pieces are stamped with the Whiting lion logo, the word "Sterling," and the number "5." The spoon is also marked with a "10" and the fork with a "15."
