A fully authentic example, that is, not made up or custom made, this butter pick measures 6 1/8" long and is relatively heavy at just over .6 T. oz.
The pattern is Durgin's 1895 "Empire." Apropos of the name, the main feature is a crown, combined with cornucopia, a torch, a garland, and floral elements, all offered in a French manner.
A slender piece, it has the twist end tip characteristic of this form. The backside of the handle is engraved "Austin" in script.
It is in very good condition. Pattern detail remains sharp and well-defined. The tip is without bends or burrs. The finish has a rich patina.
Marks are Durgin's "D" emblem, "Sterling," "Pat'd," and the name of the retailer, Boston's "Bigelow, Kennard & Co."
