Delicate and slender, this lettuce fork is extra long at 9 5/16". It weighs just over 1.0 T. oz.
The pattern is Whiting's late 19th century "Dresden," which is a charming and intricate floral design that features what appear to be forget-me-not blossoms and leaves trailing up the handle. A shell surmounts the handle tip and there is acanthus leaf detailing in other areas. The pattern repeats with slight variation on both sides of the handle.
The lower portion of the handle is plain and leads to a three tine serving end. In keeping with the rest of the piece, the splayed tines joined in a cupped heel are dainty, intended to serve soft, tender, lettuce leaves.
The piece is finished in an overall, slightly rubbed, gold wash and is in outstanding condition. It is free of polishing wear, retaining precise pattern detail. The tines are even and free of bends, nicks or burrs.
Marks are the Whiting lion logo, "Sterling," and "Pat. Apr. 18th 1896."
