On the surface, a typical piece of its period, this 6 3/16" long sugar spoon, marked "R. Fisher Jr. 331 Broadway. N.Y.," 1846-50, is actually a superior example.
First, its weight is substantial at just over 1.0 T. oz. Second, it is in exceptionally fine estate condition, essentially without wear, and having a bright, even, finish.
The "French Thread" aka "Fiddle Thread" pattern stands alongside many other iterations of this popular design, and the shell bowl is a common form. The shape of this bowl, however, is singular. It is shortened, with a broad end and a strong taper to the heel. The sidewalls are straight-sided, rather than having a characteristic rounded finish.
There is an elegant, feathered script, crisp, "LCM" monogram set sideways on the handle.
