Evidencing the imaginative design impulses of the Aesthetic mode, this circa 1880 5" diameter, 4.2 T. oz., possibly olive, bowl possesses several outstanding features.

It is double scallop shaped, with undulating walls with a flange rim. There are six smaller lobes with channels that run to the flat bottom base.

The interior retains a portion of its original gold wash finish.

The outside surface is acid etched in a branch, leaf, and flower motif that is both finely rendered and emblematic of its period.

With a monogram or inscription, it is in outstanding condition. Free of dents or bends, it has a fine finish, noting small dulled spots in the interior bottom where tarnish was polised away. The etching remains clear and well-defined.

Marks are the Whiting "standing lion" emblem, "Sterling," model number "2023," and the name of the retailer, New York's "Theodore B. Starr."
