Measuring 7 7/8" long and weighing just over 3.2 T. oz., this pair of tongs are large enough in relative terms to be described as immense. They may be an old implement that is sometimes referenced as (fried) chicken tongs.

They are stamped "Lincoln & Foss" for the mid 19th century (1848-57) Boston firm, and quite unusual for the date, "Sterling," rather than the expected coin silver.

The scroll pattern that appears on each leg is one that was probably produced by Farrington & Hunnewell, also Boston with overlapping dates to Lincoln & Foss.

The broad arch is engraved "MPB" over "RP" in flourishing script lettering.

The 2" long by 1 3/8" at the widest, cupped, grips are talon or chicken leg form, and in keeping with the piece overall, scaled for heavy duty.

They are in unqualifiedly fine condition. The finish is warm and even, showing no polishing wear. There are no bends, breaks, or cracks. Pattern detail remains well-defined, and the engraving crisp.

All in all, this is a rare period serving piece, made all the more so given its state of preservation.
