One of several umbrella partnerships that Walter S. Brower, Albany, New York, established, Hall, Hewson & Brower, whose "HH&H in a diamond surmounted by an eagle" appears on the backside of this 7 5/16" long, just under 1.2 T. oz., coin silver, master butter knife, operated 1846-52.

This is also imprinted "J.S. Sanders," for the nearby Schenectady, New York, jeweler who retailed this.

A flat-surfaced piece with a high shouldered, pointed end, handle that angles downward to the broad, 1" wide, blade, it showcases the art of engraving.

The handle front incorporates bright cutting, stippling, and wriggle work. It is prominently inscribed "Mary." in shaded Old English lettering.

The blade utilizes similar techniques to create a detailed, feathered leaf and scroll design.

The handle backside is outlined in a simple run of roulette engraving, with a notched drop at the tip.

This is in very fine condition. The engraving remains crisp and sharp, retaining virtually all of its original detail. There are no bends, cracks, nicks, or burrs, and the finish is warm and even, showing only light surface scratches consistent with age.
