Now thirty years past publication, D. Albert Soeffing's Silver Medallion Flatware remains the only single definitive volume addressing this line of classically inspired flatware designs that so called to American silver manufacturers in the 1860s.

Soeffing offered some groundbreaking insights into the history of many previously undocumented pieces, and actually offers a whole essay about his research into the attribution of the "Medallion" pattern on this 8 9/16" long, 1.7 T. oz., tablespoon.

Featuring an image of a youthful Dionysus on the handle front, it is marked on the reverse "H&S" for Hotchkiss & Shreuder, Syracuse, New York. Other marks include "Sterling," and the name of the retailer, "Leiter & Bro.," also of Syracuse. Soeffing notes this pattern was produced for a long period of time, and made in both coin and sterling silver.

Sculptural in character, the imagery is raised, which leaves it particularly subject to polishing wear. This shows none of that, with every aspect of the highly detailed, chiseled, figure remaining sharply set. Indeed the whole piece is free of wear and shows a bright, even finish and retains a well-shaped bowl that is free of dents, bends, or tip wear.

The handle reverse has an Old English "M" monogram.
