Measuring 4 1/2" long and weighing .7 T. oz., this pair of sugar tongs are marked "Sterling" and "J.H. Hart," for the Brooklyn, New York retailer with dates 1857-c. 1910.

This piece is a small silver jewel in that its major feature, namely the bright cut Aesthetic period engraving on each arm, that includes a lily of the valley flower, is exquisitely executed in a technique that shows diamond cutting at its finest. The surfaces virtually glisten, all the more so for being set against a satin matte background.

The arch is engraved "MEG" in script lettering that is as elegant as the rest of the piece.

The finely crafted grips are cup-shaped with three tines each, and are finished in a soft gold wash on the outside surfaces and a bright gold on the inside surfaces.

In mint estate condition, these show no evidence of use. The engraving remains sharp and crisp, and the overall surfaces are warm and even. There are no bends, cracks, burrs, or other marring.
