From a family of silversmiths from Southampton and New York, New York, Maltby Pelletreau also had business links with Charleston, South Carolina, through one of his multiple partnerships.

This example of his work, a 6 3/4" long, 1.4 T. oz., place or dessert spoon, is marked "P&U" for his brief time c. 1824 with Stephen Upson in NYC.

It also carries a "lion, bust, C" pseudo hallmark that John McGrew in Manufacturers' Marks on American Coin Silver places with numerous retailers, inclding several located in Charleston, SC and Savannah, Georgia, reinforcing the Southern association.

It is a "Kings" pattern on an hourglass handle, and with a plain back save for an exposed drop on the heel of the bowl.

There is a feathered script "TMP" monogram set sideways on the handle front.

In very good condition, it retains clear pattern detail with slight surface polishing wear. The bowl remains well-shaped and free of tip wear or dents, but has some pinprick dimpling in the base.
