This 3" high to the rim, 3 3/4" to the top of the handle, 2 5/8" top diameter, 4.3 T. oz., coin silver mug has identifiers that closely date it.

Stamped "Crosby & Brown" for the retailer that operated 1851-52, it is also imprinted "V.L.&B.," for significant Boston silversmith Vincent Laforme & Brother, active 1850-54.

The Boston Museum of Fine Arts holds a pitcher attributed to him, with extensive notes about the piece and maker available online, including this biographical detail,

Laforme probably apprenticed with his father, German-trained silversmith Anthony Laforme (d. 1846), who had arrived in Boston in the mid-1830s. In 1841 Anthony was listed in the Boston directory as a silversmith at 5 Water Street, next to the city’s best retail shops on Washington Street. In 1844, at age twenty-one, Anthony’s son Vincent was listed in his own shop, upstairs from his father at 5 Water Street. Known as “Vincent Laforme & Brother” from 1850 to 1854, when his brother Francis became partner, the small firm employed five workers and used only manually operated equipment.

The crafting on the Museum pitcher and this mug mirror each other, particular evident in the style of the repousse work. The mug, as stated of the pitcher, is "decorated with trailing repousséd and chased flowers and leaves." The composition of the floral and leaf elements reflect common motifs.

The mug sits on a splayed based 2 7/8" in diameter, with a plain band above this that is separated form the decorated portion by a raised ridge.

There is a reserve area that is engraved "CAR" in feathered script.

The hollow handle is scroll form and lofty.

In excellent condition, the piece is free of dents or bends. It sits evenly and has a warm patina. There is overall softening of detail from polishing, and otherwise is without signs of use or wear.
