A 9 7/8" long, 2.5 T. oz., item, this cake saw is an early production example of Gorham's "Buttercup" pattern, marked with the company's "lion, anchor, G" emblem, "Sterling," and "Patent 1900."

It is solid silver, with a flat handle, and upper sawtooth edge blade, which is the defining characteristic of this form. The shoulders are embellished with the same leaf and flower components as the design.

There is a flowing script "LMcC" monogram on the handle front.

In excellent estate condition, it shows scant evidence of use, mainly light surface scratches largely on the blade, which is otherwise free of bends or nicks. Pattern detail remains well-defined and there is a warm patina overall.
