An unusual and highly specialized place piece, American melon forks followed after a form that evolved in mid 19th century France. Few American makers produced them, so they are truly hard to find items.

Having the typical-to-the-piece extended blade with three, slightly upturned tines at the end, this example is 8 3/8" long, weighs approximately 1.8 T. oz., and is all silver with a hollow handle.

It is stamped "Ball Black & Co." for the premier New York City establishment of the period, and "950" for a silver designation that is slightly higher than sterling at "925," and used only by this among American firms.

The handle is ribbed with a dimple tip, and whether intentional or simple happenstance, resembles a melon skin.

In excellent condition, the piece shows little evidence of use. The handle is free of dents or splits, while the blade is without bends, nicks, or tip wear. The finish is bright and lustrous.
