Originally working in Gardner, Massachusetts, Porter George Blanchard became arguably the premier name in 20th century, California hand crafted silversmithing, where sources indicate he established himself in 1923, joined shortly thereafter by his father and brother.

His 1920 "Lotus," which is the pattern on this 4 1/8" long, .7 T. oz., pair of tongs, exhibits the clean, simple, lines and textured surfaces that define the Arts & Crafts style.

The arms are a fiddle-shaped, with a plain band upper portion, while the grips carry the pattern.

All surfaces save the inside of the grips show the hammering marks that are characteristic of Arts & Crafts work.

They are in excellent condition, free of damage or marring. There are several dulled or blotchy areas on the surface where heavy tarnish was polished away; otherwise the finish is bright and even.

Marks are "Porter Blanchard," "Sterling," and an "M" or "W," which may be a shop worker's mark.
