Generously sized, this gravy ladle measures 7" long, weighs 2.0 T. oz., and has a scalloped edge, satin finish interior, ovoid bowl that is 2 1/2" by 2 1/4" by 3/4" deep.

The 1881 pattern is "Rose" made by the J.B. & S.M. Knowles Company.

While a faithful representation of rose blossoms, leaves, and thorny stems, the defining feature of the design is the bug or beetle situated at the lower end of the handle front. Indeed, this pattern is often identified as "Bug" (to be distinguished from Durgin's line of this actual name) by virtue of this detail.

The backside of the piece is plain save for an embellished Old English style "D" monogram, and the marks, which include the Knowles "lion" emblem, "Sterling," the number "14," and the name of the retailer, Boston's "A. Stowell & Co."

In excellent condition, the only signs of use are fine surface scratches on the smooth areas. Pattern detail remains well-defined, the finish is warm and even, and the bowl is free of dents, bends, or nicks.
