An early example of a form that was produced for decades, beginning in the 19th century and extending well into the 20th, this solid silver, "Repousse pattern handle with an elongated, arrow head shaped blade," letter opener, dates to the mid 19th century.

It is relatively large compared to more recent pieces, measuring 7 1/4" long and weighing 1.5 T. oz.

It is marked "S. Kirk & Son" and "1015" for the peculiar to Baltimore silver standard that is essentially equivalent to coin and was used during the mid 1800s.

The square end handle is 1/8" thick, solid, and chased on both sides. The 1" at the widest, tapered blade has a slight ridge or midrib along the center line and comes to a soft point.

In good estate condition, this is without polishing wear or bends and has a warm finish. The blade shows light overall wear including some roughness at the tip and light mottling on the backside surface.
