A weighty piece, this 7 1/4" long. 1.4 T. oz., master butter knife was made by Reed & Barton whose "eagle R lion" emblem and the word "Sterling" appear on the handle backside.

The pattern is "Intaglio," which is one of several dramatic Art Nouveau patterns that the company issued in the first decade of the 20th century.

It is a multi-motif floral design that, apropos of the name, is carved into the surface as well as raised up, all contributing to an overall sculptural quality.

Customarily the flower is identified on the handle reverse and that is the case with this, which reads "peony" in very small lettering adjacent to one of the blossoms.

The blade has a scalloped upper edge, curved lower edge, and shows the pattern extending onto the heel area, front and back sides.

Never monogrammed, this remains in superb condition, absent polishing wear and with a warm finish. The blade is without bends or nicks, but shows light surface scratches consistent with normal use.
