Measuring 3 5/8" long and weighing a relatively heavy .8 T. oz., tongs this size and smaller are frequently referred to as "tete a tete" items, scaled for use with smaller tea and coffee sets.

Made by Durgin, whose "D" emblem and "Sterling" are imprinted on one arm, and retailed by Boston's "Shreve, Crump & Low," whose name appears on the other arm, the pattern is "Iris."

One of Durgin's flagship designs from early in the 20th century, "Iris" embodies all the lush expressiveness for which the Art Nouveau mode is renowned.

The detail is set in high relief, with the sinuous, leafy elements of the pattern complemented by the novel, cupped, grips.

Never monogrammed, these remain in essentially original condition, showing no wear or damage, and having a bright finish.
