A significant name among New York City silversmiths of the first half of the 19th century, examples of William Thomson's work are held in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of the City of New York, and Winterthur.

This piece, marked "W.Thomson" on the inside of one leg, is a 6 1/2" long, weighty at 1.9 T. oz., pair of tongs.

They are in a(n English) "Kings" pattern and have shell grips.

The 7/8" wide arch is engraved in an elegant, feathered script, "EPH" monogram above the date "1835."

In remarkably fine condition, these show no visible wear or damage. Pattern details and the engraving remain sharp and well-defined. There are no bends or cracks, and only minimal surface scratches, while the finish shows a warm patina.
