The New York City partnership of Kidney, Cann & Johnson dated to the mid 1860s, although it stood in the lineage of a firm that began in 1852 or before and existed until at least 1874 (Dorothy Rainwater Encyclopedia of American Silver Manufacturers).

This dating is confirmed by the engaging inscription engraved sideways on the handle of this 8 15/16" long, 2.2 T. oz., berry scoop or shovel. It reads in feathered lettering, "P.A.B. to D. & G.N., Oct. 2d (sic) 1866."

Very much a period design, the flat handle is shaped with a small knob end. The front side is engraved in a lined design that is architectural in manner.

The backside is plain, save for the marks which are "K.C & J." The standard is coin silver.

The bowl is shovel or scoop form and handsome. It has scalloped margins and is finished in a bright gold wash front and back sides.

The interior is chased in raised strawberries, leaves, and vines, bespeaking the function of this as a berry server. The form is sometimes identified as a cracker scoop (see image 2 for close up).

In outstanding condition, this is essentially without wear apart from some incidental surface scratches. The engraving remains crisp and well-defined, the bowl is without dents or bends, and the overall finish is warm and bright.
