One of several "Medallion" patterns, i.e. designs representing classical figures, produced by Wood & Hughes, the c. 1863 version on this 7 1/4" long, 1.2 T. oz., master butter, or possibly fish, knife is the only one that incorporates a twisted stem as part of the design.

The handle end is shield-shaped with a rosette at the base.

Fine, trailing leaves and vines surround the high relief, youthful warrior's right facing profile. His helmet is surmounted with a griffin, which may be an indication of which mythical figure he represents.

The shield reverse is engraved with an Old English "J" or "I" monogram.

The flat blade is set on a plane with the handle and has a scalloped margin. The top surface is engraved with period leaf and scroll detailing. The backside is plain, save for Wood & Huges' "WwH" emblem and a symbol that is likely a journeyman's mark.

Note, D. Albert Soeffing in his benchmark work Silver Medallion Flatware indicates this line was made to a sterling standard, but given this is not so marked, it is presumably coin silver and thereby likely early production in the history of the pattern.

In very good condition, this is free of damage, bends, breaks, or nicks, and the pattern detail remains clear and well-defined, without any polishing wear. The engraving on the blade, however, shows some softening from polishing.
