Singular in form, this place fork measures 7" long and weighs a heavy 1.9 T. oz.

Visually it is divided into two sections. The upper part is flat, thick, and set in a "French Thread" pattern on both sides.

The lower part of the shank is also flat, and has a splayed end where it joins the handle.

The tines are broad and relatively blunt.

It was made by William Gale of New York who operated in numerous partnerships, this one is denoted "WG&S," for William Gale and Son, which spanned the years 1853-59, in a three part emblem which includes the date "1858."

It is engraved "Julia." in formal lettering set sideways on the handle front.

In good condition, the only signs of use are shallow knife cuts on the tine tips, which are also slightly rounded. The overall surface shows light surface scratches consistent with use, while the finish is even.

Note:unmarked as to silver content, this is presumably coin as was typically used in the period. Gale, however, adopted a sterling standard earlier than other makers, so this could have followed in that direction. In either case, it presents as an unusual piece of solid silver flatware.
