British firms of the 19th century arguably and in broad terms produced silver plate, i.e. electroplate, items to a higher level of refinement than their American counterparts.
This 8 1/2" long berry spoon stamped with the hallmark for Sheffield's "Martin Hall & Co.," and a registry date symbol for 1883, is buttressing of the above assessment.
Weighty and with a heavy layer of plating, it is high style Victorian. The decorative pattern appears on both sides of the handle and is Elizabethan in manner.
The plum-shaped bowl is chased and engraved in a fruit, berry, and leaf motif and finished with a bright gold wash on the interior.
Never monogrammed or inscribed, this remains in immaculate estate condition, free of wear or damage.
