The first detail to note about this piece is that it may be a modified or even composite item.

That said, it is clearly marked with an original cursive "RP" attributed in the benchmark English hallmark reference Grimwade as likely Robert Perth, London, 1748-54. The companion lion mark for sterling is clear, while the date letter is rubbed.

Measuring 6" long overall and weighing approximately 1.1 T. oz., it has an ovoid bowl with a "Scroll Back" detail alongside a thumb drop.

The upper end of the possibly cast handle is chased on the front in something of a "Celtic Knot" design interspersed with acanthus leaves. There is a line in the metal that suggests the handle has been joined to the shank, which, again, could have been original or an adaptation.

In overall very good condition, there is slight unevenness to the base of the bowl, but no bends or dents per se. The chasing remains well-defined and free of polishing wear, and the overall finish is even and shows a soft patina.
