This basket stands 4 7/8" tall to the rim, reaches 7 1/2" to the top of the upraised swing handle, has a top diameter of 5 1/4", stands on a footed base that is 3 1/2" across, and weighs 9.4 T. oz.

Solid coin silver and dating circa 1860, it was made by Wood & Hughes whose "WwH" emblem is stamped on the underside.

It could be a sugar basket for large tea set, or perhaps a sweet meat server.

Very much a period piece, it incorporates design elements popular in the period.

The body and portions of the tiered base have engine turned surfaces, while the bottom and top rims along with portions of the handle have applied bead detailing.

The sidewall has a large reserve area that is bordered with an engraved leaf design. The center of this is inscribed "Julia" (which could be a given or a surname) in elegant, Old English lettering.

The interior of the body is finished in a bright gold wash.

In exceptionally fine condition, this is free of dents, bends, cracks or other damage. It sits evenly, has a fine finish, and retains all its original gold wash. There is a bit of rippling in places, which is mostly only evident on the smooth surfaces of the body interior.

Note: Prior to the Civil War, Wood & Hughes enjoyed a robust trade with Southern markets. This is the sort of item that would have been targeted to that outlet, although where this may have been retailed is unknowable without further marks or documentation.
