Credited with giving momentum to the surge in souvenir spoon collecting that began in the late 19th century, the first Salem Witch design was produced by Durgin and retailed by Daniel Low & Co., Salem, Massachusetts.

An immediately popular item, it was soon joined by a similarly themed pattern produced by Gorham, also offered exclusively by Daniel Low.

This 5 3/4" long, .8 T. oz., orange spoon is an example of the first, Durgin, version, marked with the company's "D" emblem, "Sterling," "D. Low," and "Ptd. Apd. For."

It features a crooked nose witch, broom in hand, and pointed hat on her head, caught in mid stride, and the word "Salem," with all details raised from the surface of the front of the handle. The backside has an elevated scroll design.

The gold finished bowl is asymmetrical with something of a funnel tip.

Never monogrammed, it remains in excellent condition. Absent polishing wear, all details of the witch remain sharp and well-defined The bowl is free of dents or bends although it shows some slight loss of the gold, more so on the backside. The overall finish is bright and even.
