A prominent Syracuse, New York silver manufacturer with a history that spanned the second half of the 19th century and lasted until early into the 20th century, Joseph Seymour produced a number of flatware patterns in coin and sterling silver.

The Square Handled Engraved pattern on this 7 5/8" long, 1.2 T. oz., jelly knife in sterling is one that does not have a lot of design parallels, either with Seymour or other producers.

The handle is flat, and as the name implies, has straight sides and a square cornered end.

This is engraved in a design that is Aesthetic in manner, reminiscent of Eastlake in this instance, which is befitting of its 1885 (patent) date of issue.

It also has a fancy, period "G" monogram inscribed on the front.

The shank has beveled edges front and backs sides, resulting in a diamond like form.

The blade is akin to an ice cream server, only smaller. It is curved on the top and bottom coming to a point, has a scalloped flange along the upper edge, and a slightly cupped base.

The surface is extensively bright cut engraved in a design that mirrors that on the handle, incorporating additional Aesthetic detailing such as grasses, bamboo, wispy flowers, and birds in flight, all set against a matte ground.

Both the handle and blade utilize wriggle work engraving for embellishment.

The backside of the piece is plain save for the marks which are "Sterling" and "Pat Appl'd For," indicating this is an early production item.

In excellent condition, the engraving remains crisp and well defined, while the overall finish is bright and even. There are no bends or dents, although there is one small burr or rasp mark on the edge above the blade tip.
