Produced by the Chicago silver firm of Wendell Manufacturing Company, Ariel is a highly expressive pattern.

Sculptural in manner, the central design element is a cherubic figure set against a dense, decorative background.

It is strongly reminiscent of Dominick & Haff's Labors of Cupid, which it predates by five years, introduced in 1895 vs. 1900.

It is a multi-motif line, meaning the figural representation varies between different pieces.

This example is a 5 5/8" long, .77 T. oz., teaspoon.

The pointed tip bowl is engraved "L-A-" in script lettering surrounded by a wispy wreath. Whether these letters represent a person's name or designate a souvenir of the city of "Los Angeles" is an unknown at this point, and something that will go forward with this piece as an unanswered mystery.

This is in all original condition. There is no polishing wear, the bowl is without dents, bends, or burrs, and the finish has a fine patina.

Marks are the Wendell "lion, W, lion," emblem and the word "Sterling."
