$135.00

Generously scaled at 9 1/2" long, and weighing 2.44 T. oz., this serving spoon has a particularly large, 4" long by 2 5/8" at the widest, bowl.

It could have been intended for berries, but the size suggests another use such as vegetables, or in Southern usage, rice.

The handle is a Pointed Antique shape and is convex.

It is extensively bright cut engraved on the obverse in a pronounced Aesthetic design that incorporates naturalistic elements such as leaves, florals and grasses along with non representational, Eastlake-like, elements.

The backside is plain save for a handsome, engraved leaf script "M" monogram.

In addition to its commanding size, the bowl stands out for its design (see enlargement 2).

Plum-shaped, it has a central raised rib extending from the handle. This converts to an inverted rib from the mid point of the bottom to its pointed tip.

The sides have flanged edges with an extended, semi-circular, shoulder on each side of the handle, all of which are wriggle work engraved.

The bowl interior is engraved in a manner that follows after the handle with wispy leaf, stem and berry details.

The bowl interior is finished in a soft, satin matte, gold wash.

In superb condition, this appears to have seen scant use. The engraving remains crisp and well-defined, the bowl is without dents, bends, or nicks, and the overall finish is bright and even.

With a likely 1870s-1880s date, this is marked only "Sterling." The style is consistent with Philadelphia silver of the period, but apart from the evident fact that this was produced by a competent manufacturer, it is without a definitive maker's attribution.
