A grooming item, this 5 1/2" long clothing brush consists of a wood base with 1 1/2" long natural bristle brushes, fitted to a silver cover. The actual silver content is likely less than 1.0 T. oz.

The piece was made by Whiting whose "lion" emblem, "Sterling," model number "4236," and "Pat. 1895" are imprinted on one edge.

The raised design on the silver is a dense, rococo style floral, scroll and rocaille. It is evocative of Whiting's Hyperion flatware issued in 1888 and Dresden, introduced in 1896, and appears to derive from a Whiting style trend of the period.

It is engraved with a "GOM" line script monogram set in the central reverse area of the pattern.

Utilitarian as well as decorative, this is in very good condition. The silver fits securely over the wood and is free of the dents, splits or pinholes that often beset such pieces. There are several faint dimples in the metal, largely along the edge. There is no loss of the bristles, which remain soft, pliable, and even.

See Old Friends item number 5514f for a similar design bonnet brush.
